Salads are almost always served with both lunch and dinner but occasionally when more ingredients are added will be served as a first course. Tomatoes, cucumber, and onions are used to make the traditional Albanian salad, seasoned with salt. Albanians make their salads based on what we have grown in our garden, all fresh and straight to the table.
Albanian Simple Salad (Sallatë të Thjeshtë)
Servings:2 – 4 People
Preparation time: 5 Minutes
- 2 Tomatoes (Sliced)
- 5 Leafs Lettuce (shredded)
- 1/4 Onion (Sliced)
- 1/4 Cucumber (Peeled & Sliced)
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar
Put the lettuce into a serving dish and push us from the middle to create a gap. Sprinkle the onion over the top. Lay the tomatoes around in a circle, covering part of the lettuce but leaving a gap in the middle. Lay the cucumber in the gap in a circle pattern. Place the mayonnaise in the middle over some of the cucumbers in a circle. Season with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt.
You can make this Albanian Simple Salad (Sallatë të Thjeshtë) ahead of time and store it in the fridge. Don’t add the olive oil, balsamic vinegar or salt until just before serving, this will prevent the salad from going soggy.
