There are lots of Albanian Stew to make such as Lamb and Yogurt (Tavë Kosi), Beef and Leek (Tavë me Presh), Rabbit and Onion (Cumlek lepuri) and also plenty of vegetable casseroles too (Gjelle Me Zarzavata being a popular one).
This Albanian beef and onion stew is slow-cooked, the beef falls apart and the vegetables are soft and tender. I love making this in the slow cooker, with the smell filling the house for the day.
Albanian Beef and Onion Stew (Tavë me Qepë)
Cooking time: 3 hours 15 Minutes
Serves: 4 People
- 1 Large Onion (Sliced)
- 4 Carrots (Peeled & Sliced)
- 2 Large Potatoes (Cubed)
- 800g Beef (Diced)
- 2 Litres Boiling Water
- 100g Onion Gravy (Granules)
- 1 tbsp Rosemary
- Olive oil
Place the carrots, potatoes, onion, and beef into a large casserole dish or into your slow cooker.
Sprinkle over the gravy granules and add the boiling water. Mix well.
Season with the salt, pepper, and Rosemary and stir all together.
Place into the oven on a low shelf, 180 degrees for 2 / 3 hours stirring occasionally. Or, turn the slow cooker up to high for 6 / 8 hours stirring occasionally.
This Albanian casserole is ready when the sauce has thickened similar to gravy and the potatoes crumble when touched.
Once ready try slicing some french bread thinly and creating a layer over the top. Sprinkle with cheese and place in the oven until the cheese is golden and bubbling.
